Documentary a highlight of Legal Assistance of Windsor annual general meeting

A screening of the documentary video “Know Your Rights” is on the agenda for the annual general meeting of Legal Assistance of Windsor, 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, at Canterbury College.

The 30-minute video, directed by Chris Rabideau and Christie Nelson for the I Decide Project, explores Ontario’s long history of institutionalization and segregation. It highlights the journey of Larry Collard, a local resident labelled with an intellectual disability, who has succeeded in putting himself at the centre of his own decision-making.

Collard, Rabideau, and Nelson will participate in a panel discussion following the screening.

Executive director Marion Overholt says the project has helped Legal Assistance of Windsor to represent and advocate on behalf of low-income individuals in Windsor and Essex County.

“We are grateful for this funding that allows us to provide education and services to individuals in our community with intellectual disabilities, in order to promote self-directed decisions and planning,” she says.

The meeting is open to the public. Canterbury College is located at 2500 University Ave. W.
