A barbecue Sunday, Aug. 25, outside the Sobeys grocery store in St. Clair Beach will raise funds to endow a scholarship in support of UWindsor students experiencing struggles with mental illness.

Social work student Alyssa Lauzon launched the Pinwheel Project as a way to honour her grandfather, who used to hand pinwheels to children in Windsor Regional Hospital, where he worked as an electrician.

She will donate a pinwheel to children in hospital for every $5 donated to the scholarship fund, and invites supporters to “bring your appetites” to the barbecue, running 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. outside the store, located at 19 Amy Croft Dr. Volunteers will sell a choice of sandwich with drink and potato chips — $3 for a hot dog and $5 for a sausage.

Lauzon has so far raised $2,375 toward her $5,000 goal and plans to make a scholarship available this fall.
