Know your flowers? With Victoria Day marking the unofficial start to summer, DailyNews is offering readers a chance to prove their botanical bona fides with a quiz about some of the plants now in bloom.
Up for grabs is a framed art print of Lancer house rules donated by the Campus Bookstore. Measuring 22 inches high by six wide, the poster retails for $29.98 and lists some helpful hints for Lancers.
To enter the contest, submit your response identifying the common names of these native flowers. The winner will be selected at random from all correct responses received by 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 25.
1. It may look exotic, but Aquilegia canadensis is native to woodlands throughout eastern North America.
2. Also known as cranesbill, the deeply-lobed leaves of this woodland plant makes it attractive even after its flowers fade.
3. Its distinctive hooded flower inspired the pious common name of Arisaema triphyllum.
4. Boasting bell-shaped blossoms hanging from arching foliage, Polygonatum commutatum is tolerant of drought.
5. The fruit of Fragaria viriginiana is smaller but perhaps more flavourful than domesticated varieties.
Send an e-mail with the common names of these native plants to uofwnews@uwindsor.ca. Contest is open to all readers of the DailyNews. One entry per contestant, please. Note: the decision of the judge in determining the most correct response is inviolable.
