Ceremony to observe raising of Pride flag

The UWinPride Committee will raise the Progressive Pride flag — a symbol of 2SLGBTQIA+ pride — over campus today: Wednesday, June 1, at 2:30 p.m. The University community is invited to watch in person outside Chrysler Hall Tower or online on the Student Experience Facebook page.

Yufei Qin, a student of communications and political science, will raise the banner. The past vice-president of student advocacy for the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance, Qin now serves Lancer Recreation as student supervisor of equity, diversity, and inclusion.

“For me, this flag is representative of the values that an institution such as a university should hold: respect, intersectionality, and a way to honour those in the past who have fought for queer rights and existence,” says Qin. “This flag isn’t just a piece of fabric to virtue signal, but as a sign of ‘Hey, you’re welcome here, and we want you to thrive!’ ”

The occasion will mark the beginning of a series of educational events planned by the committee through June. Organizers will present webinars on MS Teams at 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday:

The UWinPride Committee is always looking for people who want to work together to make the campus a safe space for all students to live and learn. Learn more at www.uwindsor.ca/lgbtq or reach out at UWinPride@uwindsor.ca.
