Women’s basketball is the only Lancer team still in the playoff hunt, after a 73-51 victory Saturday over the McMaster Marauders earned it the right to host the Ontario University Athletic championship this weekend, as well as a berth in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport title tournament in Regina, March 15 to 17.

It will be Windsor’s fifth straight trip to the national final eight. The squad has won the Bronze Baby trophy the past two years.

Lancer hockey players give back to local youths

Lancer men’s hockey captain Brett Vandehogan is known as “the Roadrunner” in Blenheim, where he starred on the Blenheim Blades junior team. Now an education student, he is working with local youth to pass on the skating skills that earned him that nickname.

Vandehogan and Lancer teammates Brett Oliphant, Spencer Pommells, Matt Renaud, D.J. Turner and Parker VanBuskirk—all involved in teaching and coaching—spent an hour on the ice with peewee players from the Blenheim area, Tuesday at Windsor Arena.

A group of Lancer hockey players is getting a head start on their ambitions to be teachers and coaches, working with local youths to pass on the techniques they have developed in their athletic training.

Captain Brett Vandehogen, assistant captain DJ Turner, goaltender Parker Van Buskirk, and forwards Brett Oliphant and Spencer Pommells will mentor young boys and girls on the ice, working with teacher candidates under education professors Kara Smith and Chris Greig to experiment with ways of teaching hockey skills.

Lancer men skate into national ranking

The Lancer men’s hockey team has earned top 10 ranking in Canadian Interuniversity Sport for the first time in 13 years.

The squad swept a two-game series against Toronto—ranked ninth last week—over the weekend to go 6-2-0 on the season. Windsor is now ranked 10th in the national media poll, its first appearance on the list since March 1999.

The team’s next home action comes Friday and Saturday, with back-to-back games against the Royal Military College. Both games are at Windsor Arena with the opening face-off at 7:30 p.m.
