Vertical sun shades were placed on the outside of the Centre for Engineering Innovation Friday by a team consisting of a crane operator and construction workers on the ground and roof who carefully positioned the wood composite beams into slots attached to the building’s front.
Another Phase II milestone was reached Friday when the main steel staircase was installed in the building’s atrium area.
Two reports in the last month suggested reforms to Ontario’s social assistance system: a commission created by the 2009 Poverty Reduction Act and the Drummond commission on the reform of public services.
Anti-poverty activist Marion Overholt, a staff lawyer at Legal Assistance of Windsor, will discuss how these reports fit into the reality of the shrinking middle class in Ontario, increasing rates of poverty, assumptions about people living in poverty, and our disappearing social welfare system at noon on Monday, March 12, in the law building’s room G101.
A degree completion program allowing engineering students from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, to finish their educations in Windsor represents a great collaborative partnership, says Saint Mary’s dean of science, Steven Smith.
“It will give our students a much broader range of options than they already have,” he said Tuesday. “Windsor has incredible programs with fantastic faculty and facilities.”
Design-build project will open in the summer of 2013
The University of Windsor will construct a two-storey Innovation Centre and a seven-level parking garage with 1,055 spaces on the south side of Wyandotte street between Sunset and California. The University of Windsor will now enter into contract discussions with Newton Parking Structures Ltd. from Guelph, Ontario to construct the first ever design-build project on campus.
The only thing limiting the possibilities of the industrial courtyard is the imagination of the people working there, according to one of the project’s managers.
“It’s a very new type of space and a new idea and I think it’s going to develop a lot as time goes on,” said Mark Beaulieu, owner of JP Thomson Architects Ltd., the architectural and engineering firm hired by the university to oversee the construction of its new Centre for Engineering Innovation. “It’s meant to generate ideas. This is the place to help get them started.”
It takes hundreds of people from across campus to pull off an event as big as Friday's Fall Open House, said Dave Bussière, assistant provost for admissions and recruiting, but it was worth it.
“We had a great day,” he said as his staff wound day from the event, which brought about 2,000 visitors to the University for tours, academic presentations, and information on programs and admissions.
“We have been so busy – the sessions were full to capacity. We have been getting wonderful feedback.”
