Local sports awards honour Lancer student-athletes

Olympian Melissa Bishop was named female athlete of the year and UWindsor women’s basketball was named team of the year, leading a contingent of Lancer athletes to win recognition at the Windsor Essex County Sports Persons of the Year awards ceremony Tuesday.

Bishop (BHK 2010, B.Ed 2011) also won the female track and field athlete of the year award after becoming just the third Canadian woman ever to run the 800 metres in under two minutes and competing for Canada at the 2012 London Olympics.

Awards banquet recognizes achievements of student-athletes

Even as she prepares to graduate, Meaghan Pototschnik says Windsor will always be her home.

“I will always be proud to say I am a Lancer,” the fourth-year nursing student said Wednesday as she accepted the DeMarco Award as the top female combining academic and athletic achievement during the annual Evening of Excellence at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

The golfer won a second straight provincial individual title while earning A-level grades. Massimo Megna, co-captain of the Lancer men’s soccer team, won the men’s DeMarco Award.

Lancers win third straight national title in women’s basketball

The Lancer women’s basketball team defeated the host Regina Cougars 66-57 Sunday to win Windsor’s third straight Bronze Baby Trophy as Canadian Interuniversity Sport champions.

Guard Korissa Williams was named the tournament’s most valuable player. She told a national audience watching on the Score network that it is “an honour” to play on the squad, which went undefeated through the season. Williams scored 46 points through three games at the tournament.

No. 1 Lancers aim for rare Bronze Baby three-peat

All eyes will be on the University of Windsor Lancers this weekend in Regina as the reigning two-time Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball champions will look to become only the fourth team in history to claim the Bronze Baby Trophy for a third consecutive year.

The CIS women’s hoops championship gets underway Friday at the University of Regina and concludes Sunday at 4 p.m. local time (6 p.m. ET) with the gold-medal final, live on The Score Television Network.

Windsor tops Carleton to claim provincial championship in women’s basketball

The Lancer women’s basketball team is back on top, winning its fourth Ontario University Athletics title in five years after downing the Carleton Ravens 56-51 at the St. Denis Centre on Saturday.

Jessica Clemençon’s 18 points led Windsor; Miah-Marie Langlois notched 14 points and 10 rebounds for the only double-double of the contest. Carleton’s Elizabeth Roach topped all scorers with 22 points.

Lancers looking to regain Ontario bragging rights in women’s basketball

After being denied their fourth consecutive Ontario University Athletics women’s basketball championship a year ago, the Windsor Lancers had something to prove to their provincial rivals this season.

Led by the all-star trio of Jessica Clemençon, Miah-Marie Langlois and Korissa Williams, the Lancers finished the regular season with an unblemished 21-0 record and breezed through a pair of playoff matchups.

Ontario University Athletics honours Windsor women’s basketball stars

Miah-Marie Langlois captured two major awards in Ontario University Athletics west division women’s basketball, and is joined by two teammates on its all-star team. Langlois, a guard, and forward Jessica Clemençon are first-team all-stars; Korissa Williams was named to the second team and Caitlyn Longmuir joins the all-rookie team.

Conference championship next hurdle in women’s basketball quest to three-peat

The Lancer women’s basketball team, ranked number one in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, will face its second post-season test at home Saturday, March 2, when it hosts the McMaster Marauders in the west conference final.

The winner will earn a berth in the Bronze Baby national championship tournament, which Windsor has won the last two seasons.

Saturday’s game starts at 7 p.m. in the St. Denis Centre. Tickets are $10, with a special youth, students and seniors admission of $8.

Lancers representing Canada on the court and on the track

How skilled are Windsor’s women basketball players? Lancers account for half of the Canadian university athletes playing with the nation’s senior national B team in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Miah-Marie Langlois, Korissa Williams and Tessa Kreiger join three of their Canadian Interuniversity Sport competitors and six Canadians playing in the NCAA on the squad.
