Architect to discuss contextual approach to design

One of the United Kingdom’s most acclaimed architects, Canadian-born Alison Brooks, will discuss her work in a free public online lecture Wednesday, Jan. 20.

Brooks is internationally recognized for her award-winning works ranging from urban design and housing to performing arts venues, higher education buildings, private residences, and exhibitions.

She is the only recipient of the UK’s three most prestigious awards for architecture: the Stirling Prize from the Royal Institute of British Architects, the Manser Medal for Architects’ Journal house of the year, and the Stephen Lawrence Prize for best project with a construction budget of less than £1 million.

Brooks’ architectural approach emerges from broad cultural research, with each project expressing a specific response to place, community, and landscape. This has produced a portfolio of projects of distinct identity.

Her lecture Wednesday, entitled “Ideals, then Ideas,” is sponsored by the Visual Arts and the Built Environment program as part of its ArchiLecture series. It begins at 6 p.m. on the Zoom videoconferencing platform, Admission is free but requires registration to attend.
