Windsor to host 2014 CIS women’s basketball championship

The University of Windsor will host the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball championship tournament, CIS announced Tuesday. The Final Eight is scheduled for March 14 to 16, 2014.

The only previous staging of the event in Windsor, in 2011, culminated with the host Lancers capturing the first Bronze Baby Trophy in school history in front of a standing-room only crowd in the St. Denis Centre. The Lancers will enter the 2014 tournament as defending three-time champions after adding Bronze Baby titles a year ago in Calgary and last month in Regina.

“The University of Windsor is grateful to once again be given the opportunity to host the CIS women’s basketball championship,” says UWindsor athletic director Gord Grace. “We look forward to promoting CIS and women’s sport in our community, and are excited to put on another memorable event that will enhance the student-athlete experience.”

CIS chief executive officer Pierre Lafontaine says he is “thrilled” to see the tournament return to the University of Windsor.

“Windsor will keep setting our very high standards expected in hosting this event,” he says. “It will be memorable.”

As hosts, the Lancers earn an automatic berth in the Final Eight tournament, along with regional champions from the Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario and Canada West associations.
