Maternal tribute pulls in worldwide audience for UWindsor student

Call it a rap song even a mother could love.

A video by UWindsor computer science student Musawar Khan rapping his heartfelt tribute Here’s to You, Mother has received more than 150,000 views on YouTube, including daily views by his mother.

“I didn’t want to make a video that you can’t show a kid,” says Khan. “These lyrics express my own feelings and my deep appreciation for my mom.”

He wrote the song after the fall semester, when he was feeling lost and missing being near his parents.

“This song helped me to regain my composure, to say the least,” he says. “At the end of the day, that’s what makes all the difference.”

The emotions have touched a nerve, generating views from 156 countries in less than a month, says Khan: “It has been unbelievable, the support that it has gained.”

A native of Toronto, Khan says his family still has ties to their homeland Pakistan, where a television network will air his video on Mother’s Day. He enjoys performing a wide range of music from pop to rap and says he hopes to continue writing and singing, no matter where his career takes him.
