Music therapy professor cited for exemplary character

Amy Clements-Cortes, a music therapy instructor in UWindsor’s School for Arts and Creative Innovation, was praised as a “compassionate, optimistic and inspiring leader” during the presentation of her “Educator of Character” award from the York Region government Wednesday.

The awards recognize community leaders who embrace character and strive to lead by example, the Character Community Foundation explained at its 2013 awards ceremony at the Richmond Hill Centre for the Performing Arts.

Dr. Clements-Cortes is a resident of Vaughan and works throughout the Toronto area and southwestern as an instructor in music therapy and clinical advisor, as well as a music therapist and researcher. She is currently president of the Canadian Association of Music Therapy and the clinical commissioner of the World Federation of Music Therapy.

Among her current research activities is a study to understand the benefits of participating in a choir on the health, wellness and successful aging of older adults. Read more about the research results on the website of the Baycrest health sciences centre.
