Canadian soldiery focus of military studies conference

Two UWindsor scholars are among the featured presenters at the Windsor Military Studies Conference, February 7 and 8 at the Major F.A. Tilston VC Armoury, 4007 Sandwich Street on Windsor’s west side.

Robert Nelson will discuss “The Unknown War: Germany’s Eastern Front, 1914-1918” and Thomas Dilworth will discuss “David Jones in the Great War” during an opening session on the First World War, Saturday morning.

A keynote address by Mike Bechtold of Laurier, entitled “Saving D-Day: the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in Normandy,” will open the conference at 7 p.m. Friday. Saturday’s sessions include presentations on the Second World War and current counterterrorism efforts.

The annual conference, now in its ninth year, is a collaboration between the Humanities Research Group, the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment, and Wilfrid Laurier University’s Centre for Military Strategic and Disarmament Studies. This year’s program also involves the HMCS Hunter, the Windsor Regiment and 21 Windsor Service Battalion.
