Remediating archival images basis of guest lecture

A visiting professor from Australia will present a lecture Tuesday on initiatives that cross digital humanities, visual anthropology, and indigenous studies.

Hart Cohen from the University of Western Sydney will present a talk called Cultural Mediations of the Visual: At the Nexus of Database, Narrative, and Archive.

An associate professor in the School of Humanities and Communication Arts, Dr. Cohen focuses his research on the Strehlow Collection, a large set of sacred objects amassed over decades by anthropologist Ted Strehlow at the Hermannsberg mission west of Alice Springs in central Australia.

His presentation addresses the re-mediation of archival images as a basis for a form of cultural repatriation reconceptualised as an interest in how images of all kinds can become the space where embodied knowledge and community interest in cultural history cross.

His lecture will be held on March 25 at 2:30 p.m. in room 1102, Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation.
