Students looking to do their best academically just have to take the right STEPS, says Christina Alcena, student development and support transition services intern.
The Skills to Enhance Personal Success (STEPS) program aids in study preparation through group sessions that introduce students to practical methods in everything from note taking to exam writing.
Sessions are held throughout the academic year by Alcena and Katie Chauvin, a UWindsor psychology grad now completing her thesis. Topics range from referencing and plagiarism to the writing process, from exam strategies to ways to study smarter, not harder.
A membership can be purchased for $15 at the Student Success Centre located in room 117, Dillon Hall. It provides more benefits than simply access to the sessions, says Alcena.
“Members have the ability to complete a Learning and Study Strategies Inventory or VARK Learning Styles test and discuss the results with either me or Katie,” she says. “This allows the student to receive customized information and advice to meet their unique needs as a learner.”
Non-members can attend group sessions for a fee of $5 at the door. Alcena also invites students unable to fit a session into their academic schedules to e-mail her at email@example.com.
