Grad reworks thesis into debut novel

UWindsor creative writing alumna Hollie Adams (BAH ’08, MA ’10) will launch her first novel with an event today—Thursday, May 14—at 7 p.m. at Biblioasis.

Things You've Inherited From Your Mother grew out of a short story Adams first wrote for professor Nicole Markotic, then developed into a novel-length manuscript as her master’s thesis. Dr. Markotic, a board editor at the book’s publisher, NeWest Press, says she welcomed the chance to take on the project.

“I was lucky enough to be the novel’s editor, and got a chance to once again see how talented and brilliant, spectacular writer Hollie Adams is,” she says.

Markotic describes the novel as a humorous tale about dealing with grief—or in the case of protagonist Carrie, refusing to deal with it. Read more on the publisher’s website.

Adams, now teaching at Alberta’s Red Deer College, says she is excited to be returning home for the book launch.

“I think the University of Windsor is a wonderful place to study creative writing,” she says. “The writing they exposed us to really challenged the preconceptions I had about what fiction could be and inspired me to rethink literary conventions.”

Today’s event is free and open to the public. Biblioasis is located at 1520 Wyandotte Street East.
