Conference to explore issues of survival in post-apocalyptic world

If zombies were real, how would you survive? A conference on the UWindsor campus October 28 and 29 will explore disaster preparedness through the lens of a complete collapse of civilization.

Registration is now open for “Interdisciplinary approaches to surviving the Zombie Apocalypse.”

The conference is open to the public and will feature a screening of a zombie film on the Friday evening. Saturday will be filled with panel discussions ranging from how to prepare for any disaster (including zombies), as well as why we are so fascinated with the zombie metaphor and other practical implications of the collapse of civilization.

“This conference is a great way for the public to better understand the role of the university in solving complex problems,” says conference organizer Lydia Miljan. “We chose the zombie apocalypse as the theme because it speaks to popular culture, but it also lets us deal with pretty serious issues in a non-threatening way.”

The conference will feature a number of workshops, including self-defence, food security, zombie diagnosis, zombie makeup, and emergency preparedness. It will conclude with a zombie walk starting at 6 p.m. in Dieppe Park and ending on campus.

Early bird registration to October 18 is $10 for students and $25 for adults. Admission includes refreshments, a boxed lunch, and a pretty cool emergency kit. Some workshops have space limitations; those interested should register early to avoid disappointment. More detailed information and registration are available at www.uwindsor.ca/zombies.
