Dean of Science addresses state of the faculty

The Faculty of Science must focus on student engagement to increase enrolment, dean Chris Houser said Friday in an address to staff, faculty and students.

The best way to recruit students is to emphasize what the faculty already has to offer, while increasing opportunities to engage in authentic, career-relevant experiences that promote leadership, engagement, application and discovery, he said.

“Science at Windsor has a faculty to student ratio of 1:15, while most other science programs in Ontario have one faculty member for more than 24 students,” said Dr. Houser, who holds an appointment as professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences. “Our small class sizes foster a level of mentorship and professional development for our students which is not possible in other science programs in Ontario.”

He outlined plans to provide undergraduate students more diverse experiences, including in research, co-op placements, paid internships, study abroad opportunities, and service learning.

Houser also committed to building outreach programs that foster community, help to recruit and retain students, and grow the faculty.

In an effort to be transparent about decision-making and resources, he presented details on the faculty’s budget.

“It is the responsibility of the Faculty of Science to eliminate annual deficit and repay the historical debt, and I wanted everyone to have a chance to see exactly what the books look like,” Houser said.
