Students’ choice coming to University Players stage

It’s powerful, surreal, disturbing — and UWindsor drama students voted it the work they most want to present on the University Players’ stage. The troupe will perform the award-winning play, Lion in the Streets, March 3 to 12 in the Hatch Studio Theatre.

The subject matter is mature, the language strong and the content disturbing, following the ghost of a nine-year old Portuguese girl named Isobel through the neighborhoods of Toronto in search of her murderer.

Playwright Judith Thompson is an officer of the Order of Canada and winner of two Governor General’s Awards for Drama. Lion in the Streets received the Floyd S. Chalmers award as Outstanding Canadian Play in 1991. Students in the School of Dramatic Art voted it as their student choice presentation for the 2016-17 season.

Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, March 5, a “Talk Back” discussion with the actors will follow the performance. The Hatch Studio Theatre is located in the Jackman Dramatic Art Centre; tickets may be purchased online at www.UniversityPlayers.com or by calling 519-253-3000, ext. 2808.
