UWindsor director to stage benefit performance for Hiatus House

UWindsor faculty member Simon du Toit will direct a celebrity reading of the play Rage Against Violence to benefit Hiatus House services in observance of Woman Abuse Prevention Month.

Rage Against Violence is a theatre piece written for and originally performed as a benefit for Women’s Crisis Services of Waterloo Region. The play is based on word-for-word interviews with real people from that area who have experienced violence.

“We know that woman abuse is a universal issue,” Dr. du Toit says. “Violence has a devastating effect on anyone who experiences it and women and their children need support and a haven during these horrific times.

“We wanted to find a way to provide some much needed financial support to help address some of the many needs Hiatus House experiences on an ongoing basis, as well as to support services at the Welcome Centre Shelter for Women, and the Sexual Assault Treatment Centre.”

The play will feature the volunteer voice talents of former CBC radio personality Bob Steele; Windsor actor Leslie McCurdy; Larry Horwitz, chair of the Downtown Windsor Business Improvement Association; and Windsor Police chief Al Frederick, among others.

The local production is set for 8 p.m. Thursday, November 2, in the Olde Walkerville Theatre, 1564 Wyandotte Street East. Tickets are $25, available from the theatre’s box office on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., 519-253-2929, or at Eventbrite.ca.
