Charity commends campus contribution to community

Sheri Lowrie is a believer. Co-chair of the campus campaign for United Way, she is so dedicated to its success that she continued to volunteer through a parental leave.

That commitment helped her to win special recognition at the charity’s “I Believe in my Community” awards luncheon, Thursday at Essex Golf Club.

On behalf of the UWindsor campaign, Lowrie collected the “Campaign Hero Award,” which salutes a workplace team for demonstrating best practices, creativity, enthusiasm and energy. Besides the University, the award acknowledged Canadian Union of Public Employees locals 1001, 1393, and 4580; Unifor locals 195 and 2458; the Windsor University Faculty Association; and retirees.

“I couldn’t miss the campaign even though I was off with my baby,” said Lowrie, who provides guidance to transfer students in the Academic Advising Centre. “I just believe too much in the United Way and the good it does for our community.”

Datta Pillay, chair of the campus campaign, said the award win is exciting.

“The team deserves it,” he said. “After revamping the campaign three years ago, our contributions have been going up and up.”
