Law society honours UWindsor professor

Teaching law combines the best of the academic and legal worlds, says Bruce Elman.

Former dean of Windsor Law, he recalls standing in front of his first class at the age of 27.

“I knew from that moment forward, that in some way, I would be able to share in the success of my students,” he says. “To look back and think of all the amazing things that the students have gone on to accomplish — it makes me really proud to know that I was able to play some small part in their journey.”

Elman received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the Law Society of Ontario at its “call to the bar” ceremony, June 20 in London. The society is the governing body of the province’s 50,000 lawyers; the call to the bar offers members of the profession an opportunity to welcome its newest members, and to honour role models for the legal community.

Elman served as dean of Windsor Law from 2000 to 2011, and continues to teach in his specialties of constitutional law, the legal profession, and legal ethics. He attributes this honour to support he received in the course of his career.

“I know this recognition isn’t just about me,” he says. “It’s about Windsor Law and the community who have helped me along the way: mentors, colleagues, staff, and students. You simply cannot accomplish these things by yourself.”
