University Players bringing to life fairy tale classic

The University Players production of Laurence Boswell’s Beauty and the Beast, Nov. 29 to Dec. 8 in Essex Hall Theatre, brings the classic tale to life with breathtaking movement and music.

Director Monica Dottor dusts off the well-known story and takes us on a journey from Beauty’s childhood home into the palace of a magical and terrifying beast. There, Beauty must find her way through a dreamlike world of magical mirrored rooms, enchanted objects, and fantastic food, to confront the beast and free the prince trapped within.

Dottor invites audiences of all ages to experience the thrill of Beauty’s adventure through a unique blend of choreographed dance and scene work. A large story book appears on stage, and the ensemble, clothed in vaudeville-inspired looks designed by Esther Van Eek, seem to be the players of the past, brought to life as the dusty tome is opened once again.

Surprises are found behind every door of set designer Joshua Quinlan’s multi-paneled playing space, as Beauty discovers the true nature of the beast, her desires, her dreams — and herself.

The show runs approximately two hours, and is recommended those seven years old and up. Tickets are available at www.universityplayers.com or by calling the box office at 519-253-3000, ext. 2808. Kids’ admission is just $8, and regular price tickets start at $19.
