Lancers mourn death of former athletics director Dick Moriarty

The death of retired professor and athletics director Richard Moriarty on June 23 saddened the Lancer family, says Jess Dixon, acting dean of the Faculty of Human Kinetics.

“He had a profound impact on our faculty and broader community,” Dr. Dixon says. “Despite retiring more than two decades ago, his legacy and principles continue to guide much of what we do in the Faculty of Human Kinetics today.”

Dr. Moriarty earned degrees in history and philosophy (1956) and higher education (1959) from Assumption University before his doctoral studies, and never left Windsor. He began a 26-year stint as athletics director in 1956 and joined the teaching faculty in 1960, retiring in 1998.

“Dick Moriarty’s handprints are all over the history of the Windsor Lancers and Assumption Purple Raiders,” says athletics director Mike Havey. “He loved the Lancers, and we loved him back.”
