Science students shine at research conference on natural health products

UWindsor science students successfully competed in the 17th annual Natural Health Product and Research Society (NHPRS) conference, held virtually at the University of Ottawa in June.

Five UWindsor students participated, competing against post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students from across Canada as well as the world.

“Our bright and motivated students made us very proud by sweeping most of the top awards,” says Siyaram Pandey, chemistry and biochemistry professor.

The four winning students are:

  • Caleb Vegh - first place Contributed Speaker Presentation
  • Ben Scaria - first place 3MT Presentation
  • Darcy Wear - second place 3MT Presentation
  • Chris Raad - Undergraduate Bursary Award

Vegh is a doctoral student working on collaborative research with Dr. Pandey and psychology professor Jerome Cohen on the neurodegenerative diseases project.

“The work he presented supported a generous donation by Mr. Joseph Szecsei in Windsor and we dedicate this work in the memory of Mr. Szecsei,” says Pandey.

In addition to winning at the NHPRS, Vegh was invited to present at the Neurological Disorder Summit 2021. He says he enjoys sharing and discussing his research.

“It’s always exciting to attend conferences to be able to hear and learn about exciting new research that’s occurring within and outside of our field,” says Vegh. “Being able to interact with scientists in different disciplines is a great way to broaden ours and others’ scientific knowledge and understanding.”

The conference had more than 80 presentations and was attended by more than 200 scientists in the field of natural health products research.
