A video commemoration of the 2021 inductees into the Alumni Sports Hall of Fame will be released Dec. 8.
Star Lancer athletes from track and field and basketball will join the University of Windsor Alumni Sports Hall of Fame with the release of a video commemoration on Wednesday, Dec. 8.
The ceremony will induct hurdler Kyle Robinson (BSc 1998), thrower Tanya Sawyers (BA 2002), middle distance runner Richard Tremain (BComm 1998), and basketball forward Iva Peklova (BSc 2010, MSc 2011), as athletes and honour Jeff May (BA 2001) for sport achievement beyond the University of Windsor.
Robinson was a three-time all-Canadian and two-time Ontario University Athletics all-star for the Lancer track team, twice a national champion in the men’s 60m hurdles — his 8.02 seconds time is still a Lancer record. He also ran on a gold medal 4x200m relay team, represented Canada at the Francophone Games in Madagascar, and made three appearances at the Canadian senior track and field championships.
Sawyers was an all-Canadian and two-time OUA all-star as a thrower, with a pair of provincial gold medals and a national gold medal in the shot put to her credit. She helped lead the Lancer women to a national team championship and three OUA titles. Swayers received the 2002 Banner Shield and remains third on the school’s all-time list in the shot put with a throw of 14.59m.
Tremain received the Olympic Shield in 1998, having twice been named the OUA athlete of the meet while capturing 10 provincial gold medals and two silver. At the national level, Rich was a nine-time all-Canadian in track and field, bringing home two gold medals and seven silver. On the cross-country course, Tremain was a two-time OUA all-star and all-Canadian, and placed in the provincial top three twice.
Peklova helped lead the Lancer women’s basketball team to its first two national championships and three OUA titles. She was named to provincial and national all-rookie teams, to the national championship all-star team, and is a five-time academic all-Canadian. She represented her home country of the Czech Republic at the Summer Universiade in 2009, and went on to a professional career in Europe following graduation.
May will receive the Alumni Sport Achievement award. A wheelchair athlete, he has won 26 Ontario championships at distances ranging from 100m to 5000m, and in 2007 took national honours in the 5000m. He has served as president of the Windsor Bulldogs Disabled Sports Club and is currently vice-chair of the Windsor Essex Sports Council.
