Still room to join in adopting a family

The initial response to a call for the campus community to join in the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation’s holiday program has been great, says organizer Sabina Howell, but there’s still time for more to sign on.

The annual Adopt-a-Family program brings holiday joy to needy children and their families in Windsor-Essex.

“We’ve had 42 departments and individuals register to sponsor 50 families so far,” says Howell. “One particularly bright spot I’m seeing is higher participation by students.”

The Children’s Aid Society matches sponsors with families who submit wish lists of treats and necessities to help make the season bright. More than 750 families each year receive support in the form of clothing, food, toys, and personal items. The University of Windsor has been among the largest contributors for more than 30 years.

“Thanks to everyone who has already stepped forward and I’m sure there are more who will want to get involved,” Howell says. “At this point, all you have to do is email me to let me know you’re interested.”

Sponsors can choose from a small family of a single parent and child, medium- or large-sized consisting of two parents and four children, or a youth living independently and attending school. They will receive a profile of their match and their wishes, along with further instructions about preparing items for delivery to the collection spot on Dec. 5.
