Banquet honours athletic accomplishments

Lancer standouts Mandy Brunet and Thomas Kennedy were awarded the Banner and Olympic Shields as the University of Windsor athletes of the year at the annual Evening of Excellence banquet Tuesday at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.

Kennedy proved himself a dominant player in U Sports men’s basketball, claiming the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy as the league’s player of the year — a Lancer first, most valuable player in Ontario University Athletics, and a first-team all-star. His 1,479 career points are the most in UWindsor men’s basketball history.

Brunet won gold in women’s triple jump at the provincial and national championships, and added an OUA silver medal in long jump.

DeMarco Awards, presented annually to female and male students best combining academic achievement with athletic prowess, went to Kristen Swiatoschik from women’s hockey and Cameron Cira from men’s cross country and track and field.

Anthony Atkinson of track and field and Lauren Gellner of women’s soccer received Captain’s Trophies for demonstrating outstanding leadership on and off the pitch.

James Gravelle, head coach of men’s volleyball, claimed the Gino Fracas Coach of the Year Award after guiding his team to the most successful season ever. Gravelle was also named coach of the year by U Sports and the OUA.
