Former Lancer to helm men’s volleyball program

A UWindsor alumnus and former captain of Lancer men’s volleyball says he is flattered to be named the team’s head coach.

James Gravelle (BA 1998) has served two seasons as an assistant coach; athletics director Gord grace announced his appointment to the top spot Wednesday, following the departure of former head coach Shawn Lippert.

Windsor to host 2014 CIS women’s basketball championship

The University of Windsor will host the 2014 Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s basketball championship tournament, CIS announced Tuesday. The Final Eight is scheduled for March 14 to 16, 2014.

The only previous staging of the event in Windsor, in 2011, culminated with the host Lancers capturing the first Bronze Baby Trophy in school history in front of a standing-room only crowd in the St. Denis Centre. The Lancers will enter the 2014 tournament as defending three-time champions after adding Bronze Baby titles a year ago in Calgary and last month in Regina.

Lancers show appreciation for student support staff

Working for the Department of Athletics and Recreational Services means having an employer that understands school comes first, says Jordan Brescacin.

“It has been a job that is very flexible,” says Brescacin, a Lancer football player in the final year of his studies in the concurrent math and education program.

A member of the event staff tasked with compiling basketball statistics, he was one of the Lancer student staff members honoured for their hard work and dedication Wednesday at the Blue and Gold luncheon held at the St. Denis Centre.

Free admission to Lancer basketball Sunday a show of appreciation for faculty and staff

Members of the University of Windsor faculty and staff—as well as their families—can attend Sunday’s Lancer basketball games free of charge.

U of W Family Appreciation Day will feature prizes and giveaways as well as match-ups between the Waterloo Warriors and Windsor’s nationally-ranked men’s and women’s basketball teams. The women play at 1 p.m. and the men at 3 p.m. January 13 in the St. Denis Centre fieldhouse.

Athletics director named North America’s best

Athletics director Gord Grace was recognized by his peers yesterday for leading his department through a transformation that has helped to bring the University of Windsor to the forefront of Canadian university athletics.

Grace received the International Athletics Director of the Year Award from the US-based National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics during a luncheon at its annual convention in Dallas. The association represents more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Innovation and participation earn recognition for Campus Recreation

With 5,000 student participants – and another 1,000 drawn from faculty, staff, and community – Campus Recreation is a huge success story, says intramurals coordinator Josh Leeman.

That success won plaudits last week, as the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Intramural Recreation Association recognized the University of Windsor with its Outstanding Intramural Achievement Award for the sixth straight year. The award honours programs that offer varied activities, promote fair play and build leadership capacity.

Athletics director to head Canadian delegation at Winter Universiade

Canadian Interuniversity Sport, as the Canadian representative of the International University Sports Federation (FISU), announced Monday the appointment of UWindsor athletics director Gord Grace as Canada’s chef de mission for the 26th winter world university games in Trentino, Italy, December 11 to 21.

Theresa Hanson, associate director of intercollegiate sport at the University of British Columbia, will lead Team Canada at the 27th summer games in Kazan, Russia, in July.

Lancers to McDonalds charity day: we’re lovin’ it

Lancer coaches and athletes turned out May 2 to volunteer for McHappy Day, the annual fundraising event that sees McDonald’s restaurants across the country donate a portion of the day’s sales to local children’s charities.

Special guests, sports and media personalities, politicians and professional entertainers greeted and served customers to help raise money for Ronald McDonald House, which provides families of sick children a home-away-from-home or a place of peace and calm within a hospital.

Lancers win local sports plaudits

Lancers took home more than half the hardware April 19, earning 12 of 23 Windsor-Essex County Sports Person of the Year (WESPY) Awards recognizing local athletes for their contributions to sports. The awards were based on accomplishments during the 2011 calendar year.

Jessica Clemençon brought home the evening’s top award as the female athlete of the year after a tremendous 2010/11 season in which she was named Canadian Interuniversity Sport female athlete of the year and helped lead Lancer women’s basketball to its first CIS championship.

Campaign to raise funds for Make-A-Wish Foundation

Staff and students involved in Lancer athletics are teaming up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in the hope of making some dreams come true for children with life-threatening medical conditions.

Athletics director Gord Grace is leading a contingent of student-athletes, coaches and other staff in “Go Blue, Go Gold and Go Bald.” The volunteers are dyeing all or part of their hair blue and encouraging sponsors to pledge to the foundation.
