University Players launches anniversary season with a new look

With a new season of plays about to begin at University Players, the theatre company is launching a bold new logo and palette of posters.

The six shows of its 60th anniversary season promise a thrilling and dramatic look at the theme of love and war, accompanied by special events throughout the school year, says Tina Pugliese, director of the School of Dramatic Art.

“We look forward to captivating our audiences with this year’s selection of classic and contemporary works,” she says. “Theatre can be a life-changing experience by its power to make us think, feel, and wonder about all sorts of possibilities; this season is filled with a variety of themes that are sure to entertain and inspire.”

Dr. Pugliese calls the first show of the season, Mr. Burns: A Post-Electric Play, an animated exploration of how the pop culture of one era might evolve into the mythology of another. It runs September 21 to 30.

October 26 marks the much-anticipated University Players’ debut of A Streetcar Named Desire, and late November will observe the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War with the poignant historic drama, A Journey’s End.

The second half of the season will open with Margaret Atwood’s feminist retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Penelope and Odysseus in The Penelopiad — a narrative told through the voices of Penelope and her 12 maids. Next, politeness turns to disorder and incivility, when two sets of parents come together in God of Carnage and help audiences to appreciate the chaos and absurdity of parenthood.

The season will close March 22 to 31 with Love and Information, a provocative modern drama-comedy that challenges audiences’ appreciation for the multiple meanings of love.

Tickets are on sale now and may be purchased at www.universityplayers.com or by calling the box office at 519-253-3000, ext. 2808. Both the box office and the website also offer more information about anniversary events.

Plaque marks former home of Iona College

A commemorative plaque installed at 208 Sunset Avenue marks the former site of Iona College, the United Church affiliate to the University of Windsor. The lot is now green space planted with lawns and trees.

A Georgian Revival house on the site, built in 1924, was home to several owners, including Judge Bruce Macdonald, who taught at Windsor Law after his retirement from the bench.

The plaque features a brief list of his accomplishments, and notes the building was acquired by Iona College in the late 1960s and vacated in 2016.

The University of Windsor took over the site and has converted it to a parkette.

The Campus Bookstore invites shoppers to get their blue and gold on, in a rugby-style jersey that pairs a classic look with contemporary fit and feel.

In horizontal stripes with a Lancer logo embroidered over the heart, the shirts have a contrasting white collar and three-button concealed placket.

“This rugby shirt is steeped in heritage and a must-have if you’re looking for a traditional, casual style,” says marketing co-ordinator Martin Deck. “Plus it’s made of breathable cotton with chambray trims, so it’s super-comfortable.”

The store, located on the lower level of the Campus Bookstore, has them in stock in a range of sizes for $69.95.
