Lancer coaches to serve community on McHappy Day

Don’t be surprised if you see a familiar face behind the free smile at McDonalds on Wednesday. A number of Lancer coaches and athletes will be serving lunch at the restaurant’s Huron Church Road location in support of McHappy Day, May 2.

The promotion sees $1 from every Big Mac sandwich, McMuffin sandwich and happy meal donated to Ronald McDonald House charities of Canada to improve the quality of life for children with serious or chronic illnesses or disabilities.

Track and field coach Brett Lumley and members of his family will volunteer from 1 to 2 p.m., when the second shift takes over: Lancer football head coach Joe D’Amore and quarterback Austin Kennedy, women’s volleyball head coach Lucas Hodgson and setter Jessica Shepley.

Athletics marketing manager Eric Vandenbroucke said the cause is particularly dear to the department, since Ronald McDonald House helped the Lumley family during a very difficult time when their daughter was sick in January 2010.

“I hope fans will come out in support that day,” Vandenbroucke said. “We’ll be heading over about 2 p.m. for a light lunch to support our Lancer volunteers.”

The outlet is at the intersection of Huron Church Road and College Avenue, located cater-corner from the Human Kinetics Building and south campus stadium.
