Lancers suiting up for football all-star game

Four Lancers will take to the field this weekend for the biggest annual showcase of Canadian university football talent.

Quarterback Austin Kennedy, defensive back Matt McGarva, defensive lineman Garrit Post and receiver Evan Pszczonak will play for the West in the 10th annual Canadian Interuniversity Sport East-West Bowl, Saturday in London.

The East side is comprised of student-athletes representing schools from the Atlantic and Quebec conferences, as well as from Queen’s, Ottawa and Toronto. The West contingent is made up of players from Canada West and from the remaining Ontario universities.

Coach Joe D’Amore will be on the sidelines, serving as an assistant on the West team to Stefan Ptaszek, head coach of the reigning Vanier Cup champion McMaster Marauders.

“On an annual basis, the biggest showcase of Canadian university football talent -- players and coaches -- occurs at the CIS East West Bowl,” Ptaszek said. “To work with the brightest minds and most gifted student-athletes in our nation is a privilege and an honour.”

Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. at Western University’s TD Waterhouse Stadium. Find more information, including ticket details, on the CIS Web site.

The game serves in part as a scouting venue for the Canadian Football League. Lancer defensive back Shea Pierre was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts last week.
