Lancers representing Canada on the court and on the track

How skilled are Windsor’s women basketball players? Lancers account for half of the Canadian university athletes playing with the nation’s senior national B team in preparation for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Miah-Marie Langlois, Korissa Williams and Tessa Kreiger join three of their Canadian Interuniversity Sport competitors and six Canadians playing in the NCAA on the squad.

Lancer head coach Chantal Vallée is an assistant coach with the team, currently in Europe for exhibition games. After dropping a pair to Montenegro, the players are preparing for three games against Belgium this weekend.

Vallée is pleased with Windsor’s representation, pointing out the team’s importance in training for the Rio Summer Games: “Most of the current Olympic team members will retire by 2016.”

Lancer alum chasing Olympic dream

UWindsor graduate Melissa Bishop (BHK 2010, B.Ed 2011) took another step toward London this week, bettering the Olympic B standard in the 800m run for the second time this season.

Bishop, a former star middle distance runner with the Lancers and winner of the 2010 Banner Shield as the university’s top female athlete, holds Canada’s two fastest times in the event this year.

Currently ranked by the International Association of Athletics Federations as the world’s 10th-best 800m runner, she now has two routes to a berth on Canada’s Olympic team:

  1. Run a qualifying time under 1:59.90, the Olympic A standard, or
  2. Finish in the top three at the Canadian Track and Field Trials in Calgary, June 27 to 30.
