Reception fêtes accomplishments of science faculty, staff and students

As a relative newcomer to campus, Steven Rehse—who joined the physics department in May 2011—says the Science Celebration of Success serves several purposes for him.

“First, it’s great to see what people in other departments are doing. Second, there is a social element and I am still getting to know people,” he said. “Finally, it’s great just to keep reminding ourselves of the extraordinary things going on in our faculty.”

Rehse won recognition for his work developing the medical physics program at the 13th annual celebration, held Friday in Vanier Hall to honour individuals who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research and service.

Dean Marlys Koschinsky called it a highlight of the year’s calendar.

“Success cannot be achieved without dedication and commitment from everyone,” she said. “I am proud that our faculty has shown once again their continued support for each other in ensuring our success.”

Among the awards to faculty, staff and students was a lifetime achievement award to biology professor Lynda Corkum in recognition of her contributions as a scholar, as a mentor, and to administrative duties. Dr. Koschinsky called her “a leader in the field” of chemical communications in aquatic species.

“While maintaining a research program of  international repute, Lynda is well known for her extensive publication record, student supervision, mentoring, generosity and spirit,” she said.

The event also marked a donation from the faculty to the Essex Region Conservation Authority, made in lieu of a welcome gift to the celebration’s attendees. Find a full list of the evening's honorees on the science Web site.
