Volunteering on the Research Ethics Board of Hotel-Dieu Grace Hospital presents an excellent opportunity for a student interested in gaining health care volunteer experience, says Todd Sands, executive director of the Centre for Smart Community Innovation and vice-chair of the board.
“The hospital’s REB functions under the same guidelines as the University’s REB,” Dr. Sands says. “Community involvement in clinical drug and treatment trials exposes REB members to the research process, and also provides a valuable learning experience about how research establishes new foundations for future health care.”
He encourages graduate or upper-level undergraduate students with a career interest in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, or psychology to apply.
Interested students may submit to firstname.lastname@example.org by April 30 a resume, along with a cover letter that completes the following in no more than one paragraph: “I am interested in volunteering on the HDGH Research Ethics Board because…”
Sands will bring forward submissions to the board for review at its May meeting. The student selected will need complete an online training module from the National Institute of Health to obtain a certificate required of all members of the hospital’s REB.
