Reception to provide campus recognition of student as a caring Canadian

Friends and admirers of Bernarda Camello-Doctor will have an opportunity to honour her at a reception Monday celebrating her recognition by the Governor General for her contributions in support of youth, both in Windsor and abroad.

Camello-Doctor was to have received the Caring Canadian Award last year, but was unable to attend the conferral ceremony in Ottawa. The award recognizes volunteers who build a smarter and more caring nation, highlighting their example of compassion and engagement.

A UWindsor student for more than 50 years, a former member of faculty and a proud alumna (MEd 1984, CRS 1999), Camello-Doctor has been active on campus since coming to Canada in 1959 from her native Philippines.

“She is one of our most energetic volunteers,” says dean of students Clayton Smith.

Besides her extensive involvement with the Organization of Part-time University Students, the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance and the Alumni Association, he points to her participation in the University Singers and work mentoring international students, which earned her a “Going the Extra Mile” award from the division of student and international affairs in 2012.

She founded the KidsCare Philippines Education Service Centre in 2003 to provide at-risk children in Manila with assistance to pursue schooling, including health and hygiene needs, food and clothing. Among other community organizations, Camello-Doctor has volunteered for St. Anne’s Parish Youth Ministry, St. Vincent de Paul International, the Multicultural Council of Windsor and Essex County and the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society.

The reception runs 2 to 3:30 p.m. Monday, July 7, on the rooftop terrace of the Centre for Engineering Innovation, and is open to the campus community. RSVP today to Mary-Ann Rennie at mrennie@uwindsor.ca or 519-253-3000, ext. 7059.
