UWindsor Interns gain practical knowledge on film set

Four UWindsor Communication, Media and Film (CMF) students joined their professor this summer as interns on an actual film set, putting theory into practice.

Matthew Sabelli; Christina Bresolin; Erik de Paulsen; and Kurt Sasso joined professor and filmmaker, Mike Stasko in shooting, The Control, a science-fiction movie co-written and co-directed by professor Stasko and Eric Schiller. The film is a production of Stasko’s film company, "The Dot Film Company".

Stasko says though many other UWindsor students helped on the film, the four participated as official interns, earning school credit as part of internship courses offered through the CMF program.

Bresolin says she had the fortunate opportunity to spend three weeks on set as associate producer, assistant to the producers, and second assistant director.

“During the production, my main responsibility was to make and distribute the call sheet and daily script sides for the following day’s shoot. I also helped with various tasks such as driving actors, setting up craft services, and coordinating with the catering service.”

Paulsen says he prefers the practical side of a learning experience rather than the theoretical, so he found the hands-on aspect of the program valuable.

“Even if you are a student looking to get into advertising, radio, television or anything else, do an internship,” he says. “The people you meet and the hands-on experience you will gain is way more valuable than any course you could take instead…”

Stasko says the CMF’s intern program is a natural extension to classroom learning.

“The idea is building up our students in the classroom, then giving them the opportunity to put their new skill set to work in the real world.”
