Lancer fans invited to show off basketball skills Saturday

If you have ever dreamed of showing off your basketball skills, Saturday is your chance.

The Lancers are partnering with the National Basketball Association Canada to host a skills competition January 16 at the St. Denis Centre.

Members of the Windsor-Essex community who are 14 years or older will compete in a dunk contest, a three-point contest, or a skills challenge for a chance to strut their stuff at the NBA all-star game in Toronto in February.

The qualifier runs noon to 3 p.m. Registration is free and will start at 11:30 a.m. at the St. Denis Centre or contestants may pre-register with Josh Leeman at jleeman@uwindsor.ca. Former Toronto Raptors star Morris Peterson, an NBA all-rookie and 2000 NCAA champion with Michigan State University, will attend.

Top performers will advance and compete in the next round, held during the Lancer women’s and men’s basketball games against the Algoma Thunderbirds starting at 6 p.m. Both Windsor teams are currently at the top of the divisional standings.

“Even if you’re not going to join the skills competition, come on out and support the Lancers on home court,” says Elisa Mitton of the athletics office. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere and we would like to have as many fans as possible cheering on our teams!”
