St. Denis Centre to host season openers for varsity volleyball teams

Lancer women’s and men’s volleyball teams will open regular season competition this weekend when they host a pair of doubleheaders at the St. Denis Centre.

The Waterloo Warriors are up first, Friday, November 4, with the women playing at 6 p.m. and the men at 8 p.m. On Saturday, the Lancers hit the court against the Guelph Gryphons; women at 2 p.m. and men at 4 p.m.

Lucas Hodgson, head coach of Windsor’s women’s team, says his squad has potential.

“If our younger players can sustain through the year, I think we have the talent to be a strong team in the OUA,” he says. “Our veterans need to mentor and support our rookies so that we can continue to grow as a unit.”

The only other home action in Lancer athletics this weekend is men’s hockey, who will face off against the Queen’s Gaels at South Windsor Arena in games Friday and Saturday — the puck drops both nights at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s hockey is in Toronto, playing the Ryerson Rams on Friday and the Toronto Varsity Blues on Saturday.

And women’s soccer is competing in the Ontario University Athletics championship tournament in London, meeting the Ridgebacks of UOIT in a semi-final Friday at 3 p.m. and playing for a medal on Sunday, time and opponent depending on the results of the semis.
