Researcher makes waves at marine mammal conference

UWindsor’s resident shark expert made waves last week during his opening talk at a conference devoted to the protection of marine mammals.

Biology professor Nigel Hussey gave a plenary talk on Thursday at The Society for Marine Mammalogy’s 22nd Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals in Halifax.

Dr. Hussey discussed advancing an ecosystem field approach to understand and manage aquatic predators to more than 1,700 marine experts and researchers at the Scotiabank Centre arena.

“There were a lot of jokes about the shark guy giving the plenary talk at a marine mammal conference,” Hussey laughed. “But I think it is important to highlight ecosystem over single species focused field studies to facilitate true ecosystem based management.”

The conference, which this year focused on the conservation impacts to marine mammals and the efforts to understand and ensure their continued survival, ran from October 22 to 29.

Even former UWindsor research communications coordinator Stephen Fields made an appearance at the conference. Hussey said he was highlighting the proverb, "Science is magic that works."
