Volunteering provides valuable experience, student avers

Giving one’s time is a valuable investment, says business student Kyle Cacilhas, and in his case it has already paid dividends.

He describes his experiences with the university’s Volunteer Internship Program (VIP) in an account published by the Windsor Essex Association of Volunteer Administrators.

“VIP allowed me to reflect on my experiences while developing the essential skills needed to confidently excel in my future career,” writes Cacilhas. “The biggest lesson I learned was that time really is money. Making the time to volunteer in my community over the years opened doors to paid opportunities.”

The association distributed a 12-page insert in the Saturday, April 14, edition of the Windsor Star in observance of National Volunteer Week. See a digital version of it here; Cacilhas’ piece is on page 8. The front page features a photo of Jane Sylvester, an applied learning co-ordinator in Career Development and Experiential Learning who volunteers as the association’s program co-ordinator.
