In the 50 years since its founding, Black Moss Press has introduced more than 100 new authors and built a national reputation for its contributions to Canadian literature. A brunch reception on Sunday, Oct. 20, will celebrate that golden anniversary and serve to launch a book recounting those contributions.

“It’s a moment to look back, but also one of reassurance that maybe we did something positive in helping grow Canadian literature,” says founder Marty Gervais, UWindsor’s resident writing professional and the inaugural poet laureate for the City of Windsor. “We made it our mandate to nurture the literary scene and respect the traditions and cultures of southwestern Ontario.”

In his book, Pressing Matters: 50 Years in Publishing, author Bruce Meyer traces the history of Black Moss Press, and also traces how publishing works — taking an idea from conception to printing and beyond. Meyer also explores the experience of UWindsor students in Gervais’ publishing practicum course.
