Head Start 2013 invites new students to “Unleash their Inner Lancers”

The Head Start orientation program will give incoming students an opportunity to learn about the campus community, says organizer Laura Prada, student development and support transition services intern in the Educational Development Centre.

“From June 4 to 11, students will be visiting the UWindsor campus to meet their professors, register for courses, join a campus tour, and have the chance to win a $500 award daily,” she says.

Gurus lead new students through transition to university

Almost 200 advice gurus assisted more than 200 first-year students with their transition to university through the Educational Development Centre’s Connecting4Success mentorship program this year.

The program targets first generation students—the first in their families to attend university—and matches them with upper-year students in the same program or faculty. Throughout their first year, students meet one-on-one with their advice gurus and attend monthly meetings that focus on common first-year academic, social and personal challenges.

Registration opens for Head Start 2013

The Educational Development Centre has opened online registration for Head Start 2013.

The orientation event runs June 4, 5 and 6 for the Odette School of Business, inter-faculty programs, and the faculties of engineering, nursing and science; and continues June 7, 10 and 11 for programs in human kinetics, arts and social sciences.

All new students are encouraged to attend where they will be able to:

Application deadline today for student leadership initiative

Students hoping to make a difference on campus have one last chance to apply for the Lead@UWindsor program, an initiative of student and international affairs to provide them with the opportunity to get involved.

Volunteers can choose to help with events such as Head Start and Windsor Welcome Week as well as in offices like the Aboriginal Education Centre, the International Student Centre, the Educational Development Centre, or the Centre for Career Education.

Students, faculty encouraged to tune out and turn off Friday

Smartphones, computers, laptops and tablets—being plugged in all the time can drive you crazy.

As a finale to Mental Health Awareness Week, Screen Free Day invites members of the UWindsor community to take a break from electronics on Friday, January 18.

The technology fast is a project of Campus Ministry, which has arranged other activities to keep people’s hands busy, including board games all day in the Assumption University lounge.

STEPS program builds study skills

December 18 marked the last day of exams of the fall 2012 semester at the University of Windsor.

The school’s Skills to Enhance Personal Success (STEPS) program aided in the preparation for final exams through group sessions that introduced practical methods to help students improve their learning and study skills.

“The top two sessions would be those on test anxiety and multiple choice exams,” said Laura Prada, student development and support transition services intern.
