Residence life coordinator for Macdonald and Electa halls, she says a food drive launched by the Higher Education Reaching Out (HERO) Project on Saturday, April 6, collected 7,200 lbs. of goods—almost double last year’s amount.
“This year’s Day of Action was crazy successful,” says Mellish. “In total, we had 120 volunteers representing all six residence halls, plus staff helping out.”
Everyone can be a hero, says Jacqueline Mellish, residence life coordinator for Macdonald and Electa Halls. She is calling on the University community to join in an effort to help replenish the dwindling supplies in local food banks.
Student volunteers with the Higher Education Reaching Out (HERO) Project will fan out across the city on Saturday, April 6, for a Day of Action to collect non-perishable foods, but the donations can start early, says Mellish, if faculty, staff and students drop off contributions to the Residence Services office.
After giving out more than 1,000 pieces of candy, plus bottled water and literature, organizers of Friday’s “I Clover Sober” event pronounced themselves satisfied with the effort.
“A lot of the students are really enjoying the tips we are giving them,” said Donja Trivers, a residence assistant – academic in Laurier Hall. “We are getting a good response.”
The annual campaign encourages students to enjoy St. Patrick’s Day responsibly. The holiday is often an occasion for alcohol abuse.
“We’re reminding them to know their limits – and stay within them,” Trivers said.
With a theme of “Making our Mark!” a delegation from UWindsor residence took home several major awards from the Great Lakes Affiliates of College and University Residence Halls conference this past weekend – including the right to host the event next year.
“This is the first time in 20 years that this conference has travelled to Canada and the first time ever hosted at the University of Windsor,” said Jacqueline Mellish, residence life coordinator for Macdonald and Electa halls.
