Discussion to open series on contemporary poetry

Poet Roger Farr is the first in a series of four visitors to the UWindsor campus who will discuss their work as it relates to language.

The author of the poetry books Surplus, Means and IKMQ, Farr will open the Language of Contemporary Poetry series with his free public lecture “Slang, Jargon, Antilanguage,” Tuesday, February 7, at 5:30 p.m. in the CAW Student Centre’s second-floor boardroom.

Building of bicycle critical mass subject of documentary

Cyclists are building critical mass in Vancouver and changing the face of the city. A film to be screened on the UWindsor campus Thursday charts the development of the city’s critical mass rides – cyclists grouping together to claim road space.

You Never Bike Alone asks whether cycle activists are succeeding in their goals. Through interviews with motorists “stuck in traffic,” cyclists of all backgrounds, and local politicians, journalist Robert Alstead asks whether Critical Mass and similarly styled rides are winning hearts and minds.

Relocation to campus sending a message: development commission is serious about partnerships

Ron Gaudet, chief executive officer of the Windsor Essex Economic Development Corporation, told a national audience that relocating its offices to the Centre for Engineering Innovation is much more than a physical move.

“It is a message to the internal [local] and external community that we are serious about partnerships and serious about taking this region to another level,” he said in an interview with a business reporter from the Globe and Mail.

Colloquium to consider ways to bridge summer setbacks in learning

School achievement gaps stem partly from inequalities among children’s opportunities to learn outside of school, particularly during the summer, says Scott Davies. Some children entertain themselves over summer breaks from school, while others enjoy a menu of enriching activities.

The “summer setbacks” compound, eroding the literacy skills of disadvantaged children and attributing to an achievement gap by high school, says Dr. Davies, a professor of sociology at McMaster University.

Removal of tower crane sign of construction progress

A huge tower crane that has become a part of the Windsor skyline and a visual reminder of UWindsor’s exciting expansion was removed yesterday from the Centre for Engineering Innovation construction site.

Matt Soulliere, project manager for PCR Contractors Inc., says the crane was used mainly for concrete placement and has been at the site since shortly after groundbreaking in January 2010. With most concrete work completed, the iconic symbol of progress is no longer needed.

Panel to discuss contemporary abstract art practice

With a retrospective of major Canadian abstractionists as a backdrop, a panel will discuss the topic “Unpacking Abstract Art Practices Today” Saturday at the Art Gallery of Windsor.

Part of the Alone + Together visiting artist lecture series, the event will feature art historian and critic Karen Wilkin joining artists Luanne Martineau and John Kissick, both of whom have exhibitions currently on display at the gallery. Roald Nasgaard, author of Abstract Painting in Canada and professor contemporary art at Florida State University, will act as moderator.

Last chance to enter no-smoking contest

University of Windsor students will have extra incentive to kick the habit. Registration is open this week for Leave the Pack Behind, a contest to discourage tobacco use, open to student smokers and non-smokers alike.

Contestants who meet the contest guidelines during the period of January 23 to March 5 enter a draw to win certificates toward their 2012/13 tuition in several categories:

Campus artists team up for group painting exhibition

A reception tonight will celebrate the opening of a group painting exhibition featuring works by artists with UWindsor ties.

Dean Carson, a staff member in the Leddy Library, and former visual arts instructor Jim Mroczkowski have teamed up with Matthew Hawtin for “Are you in the room?” at SB Contemporary Art.

Gallery owner Sarah Beveridge said she was initially intrigued by the differences in the artists’ practices and processes, but couldn’t help drawing parallels between them.

Food services worker remembered as a pleasant presence

Denise Brockmann, a cafeteria cashier who died January 15, is remembered as someone good to work with, says Mark Bagley, manager of satellite operations.

“She was a good worker and very, very pleasant to be around,” he said. “She will be missed by her friends and co-workers here. Our condolences from all food services staff go out to her family.”
