Faculty, staff, and students welcomed more than 650 Master of Engineering (MEng) students at the 2023 Winter Orientation on Wednesday, Jan 4.
The session included a movie and sports event highlights with popcorn, a light lunch, the presentations themselves, and campus tours.
“It was exciting and fun to see so many enthusiastic new students attend the in-person orientation,” says Dr. Peter Frise, associate dean for professional programs. “The event filled all three of the big lecture theatres in the CEI and was a great success.”

Farshid Bazmi’s method for diagnosing helicopter engine faults won a gold medal in the aerospace category at the Seoul International Invention Fair.

A team based at the University of Windsor was awarded a gold medal for its research into improving the reliability and safety of helicopter engines at the Seoul International Invention Fair.
Farshid Bazmi, a postdoctoral fellow in mechanical engineering, professor Afshin Rahimi, and industry partner Moein Foroud of AviationTech Solutions, proposed a new method of diagnosing fouling faults in turboshaft engines.
“Fouling is caused by the adhesion of fine materials to the compressor blades, which changes the shape and function of the airfoil,” Dr. Bazmi said. “Our model-based method aims to increase accuracy and speed at the simulation of compressor performance in off-design situations.
“Our method promises more reliability, higher precision, power assurance, higher efficiency, and reduced risk.”

A team of Windsor engineering students UWindsor’s enjoyed success in the Intercollegiate Rocketing Engineering Competition.

UWindsor’s first rocket team since 2019 placed fourth in the 30,000-foot category at the Spaceport America Cup student contest in New Mexico.
The team of fourth-year engineering majors Anthony Degirolamo, Matthew Veselinovi, Christopher Francis, Nina Mussio, Hunter Batten, Jesse Davidson, Emiliji Radevski, Connor Matton, and Jesse Potma under the direction of professor Aleksandr Cherniaev, worked on the experimental sounding rocket for the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition.
Veselinovis called it one of the most enjoyable experiences of his university career: “It was exciting as it was the only capstone project with a competition.”
COVID restrictions limited the time the students could work on construction.

From cost-effective, electric vehicles with superior torque density and performance to energy-absorbing devices that can save lives in automotive crashes or bomb explosions, more than $3.2 million in federal funding will advance University of Windsor research at the forefront of Canadian engineering innovation.
Seventeen researchers in the university’s Faculty of Engineering received funding through the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada’s five-year term Discovery Grants and the Research Tools and Instruments Grant program.
Dr. Bill Altenhof, who specializes in mechanical and materials engineering, is developing high performing adaptive structural energy absorbing devices that can adjust force and displacement response as needed. These responsive materials have the potential to mitigate serious injuries or death as a result of falls, automotive crashes, pedestrian impacts, blasts or bomb explosions.

UWindsor Engineering alumnus Steve Ray has been inducted into UWindsor's Alumni Sports Hall of Fame for his outstanding performances in volleyball.
The 34th annual Alumni Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Presentation was held Oct. 6.
Following Sunday’s ceremonies, the Hall of Fame now boasts a distinguished membership of 135 inductees, 31 Sport Achievement recipients and 39 Team Achievement recipients.
