Academic Researchers in Non-academic Careers: Post-PhD Career Paths

Friday, March 24, 2023 - 14:00 to 15:30

The Health Research Centre for the Study of Violence against Women presents:

"Academic Researchers in Non-academic Careers:  Post-PhD Career Paths"

Guest speakers Dr. Dusty Johnstone and Dr. Brittany Jakubiec will be discussing their individual PhD and career journeys that led them to non-academic positions within their respective communities. All graduate students are welcome to join in on the discussion to learn more about non-academic opportunities and alternative career pathways that they can explore. This is a great opportunity to learn and connect with other academic professionals.

About Dr. Johnstone: Dr. Dusty Johnstone is the Director of Sexual Violence Prevention, Resistance, and Support at the University of Windsor. Her primary role is to provide support to members of the campus community who have experienced sexual violence. She is also responsible for coordinating campus-wide sexual assault awareness campaigns, developing training for staff and faculty, and implementing best-practice educational programs for students. Notably, she oversaw the implementation of the University of Windsor’s nationally recognized Bystander Initiative to End Sexual Assault. Her research on women’s experiences of rape has been recognized by the American Psychological Association, and she has been awarded for her innovative teaching of sexual violence for the Psychological Study of Social Issues.

About Dr. Jakubiec: Dr. Brittany Jakubiec (they/them) is a French-Polish settler living and working in Epetwitk (PEI). They are the Director of Research at Egale Canada. Egale is Canada's national 2SLGBTQI organization. Egale works to improve the lives of 2SLGBTQI people in Canada and to enhance the global response to 2SLGBTQI issues. Egale achieves this by informing public policy, inspiring cultural change, and promoting human rights and inclusion through research, education, awareness, and legal advocacy. Our vision is a Canada, and ultimately a world, without homophobia, biphobia, transphobia and all other forms of oppression so that every person can achieve their full potential, free from hatred and bias. Brittany has more than a decade of experience in qualitative and mixed methods research, as well as multi-sectoral work experience in non-profit leadership, academia and teaching, and government. Brittany has an interest in the systemic, political, and social experiences of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. In their spare time, they love to cook, read, play board games, and spend time with family.
