Decolonizing Democracy: Centering Indigenous Resilience in Public Institutions

Thursday, October 15, 2020 - 09:30 to 10:45

Join Associate Dean (Academic) Beverly Jacobs at DemocracyXChange, Canada’s annual democracy summit, as she participates in a panel discussion.

Panel Description:

Indigenous laws, systems of governance, and ways of knowing are foundational to what we now understand as Canada’s approach to democracy. As Elders, community members, scholars, and allies work to create critical space to support Indigenous governance and law-making, how do colonial democracy and its institutions reflect and reject Indigenous ways of knowing, particularly in the context of a pandemic that disproportionately impacts First Nation, Inuit and Métis Peoples? This session with leading scholars will examine how Indigenous resilience, thought and action can define a new chapter for democratic institutions in Canada. Presented in partnership with the Ontario Bar Association.
