Certificate in Online and Open Learning (COOL)

The Certificate in Online and Open Learning (COOL) is a flexible program offered by the Office of Open Learning team to prepare instructors for designing, developing and teaching high-quality online, blended, technology-enhanced, and open courses. The program is designed for busy instructors and graduate students, with a wide range of activities designed to suit different needs and preferences.

The COOL courses are offered entirely online, and free to UWindsor instructors, staff, and graduate students. These practical courses introduce you to the pedagogy of online and technology-enhanced teaching, as well as the tools you need to get started right now in creating and delivering an excellent online course. Your learning in these active courses is guided by online learning specialists, and each individual course offers a certificate of completion.

The 6-week mini-courses can be taken individually, or combined with a series of flexible activities to earn the full Certificate of Online and Open Learning. Courses currently offered include:

How to earn the Certificate of Online and Open Learning

The COOL provides multiple pathways to earn the certificate, recognising the range of needs and experiences of instructors.

COOL Must Haves:

To earn the Certificate of Online and Open Learning, you must complete one of the following:

  1. Complete the three mini-courses (Anatomy of an Educator, Practice What You Teach and Exploring the Edges of Online Teaching)

  2. Complete two of the mini-courses, PLUS the Online Course Design Institute

  3. Complete two of the mini-courses, and three selected workshops

  4. Combine any of the above options, and provide evidence of prior experience (e.g. online course development projects, MOOC completion, completion of other relevant learning experiences).

In addition, you must also undertake the following:>

  1. Submit an ePortfolio demonstrating your learning and development as an online or technology-enhanced teacher

  2. Complete a course (re) design for an online, hybrid, open, or technology-enhanced course

  3. A peer teaching observation OR lead a workshop
