Tri-Success Grants

Tri-Success Grant Program

The goal of this program is to provide assistance to researchers who wish to improve their Tri-Council grant application which was judged by the agency to be of high quality but was not funded due to restrictions in the financial resources of the agency.  Following an internal review, the number of awards will be dependent on the availability of the funds and the ranking of the applications by the Adjudicating Committee.  The Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI) is responsible for providing the funding. The provision of funding and continuation of this program are contingent upon availability of funds.

Eligibility and Requirements:

To be eligible to apply for competition, NSERC applicants must have received a rating of at least moderate in the three rated categories in their most recent competitions. For SSHRC applicants, they must be in at least the fourth sextile in their ranking. CIHR applicants must have received a minimum rating of 3.5. During the internal review process, higher ratings will be weighted at a higher value. The applicant will be required to submit the following to ORIS to be provided to the Adjudication Committee:

  • A completed TSGP application form (NSERC or SSHRC, as applicable) which includes a budget and justification and a brief plan of how the money will be spent to address issues raised in the reviewers’ comments which includes
    • A commitment to resubmit an application in the next targeted NSERC or SSHRC competition following the awarding of the TSGP, and to attend a relevant ORIS Information Session (included with application)
    • A commitment to submit to ORIS a revised grant eight weeks prior to the targeted CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC deadline for peer review and to take advantage of reviews resulting therefrom (included with the application)
    • Reviews, ratings and panel comments received by the applicant regarding the NSERC or SSHRC application (upload as an attachment)
  • If an applicant currently has funds from an existing grant or grants, an application for a TSGP award may be considered ineligible unless the need for the funding is explicitly justified in the application form.
  • Adjudication Committee:  The Committee will normally consist of one researcher from each faculty and will be chaired by the VPRI or designate. The decision of the Committee will be final.  The process is outlined below.
    • Submissions will be evaluated on the basis of NSERC or SSHRC ratings, a proposed timeline for revision, and the extent to which the plan addresses the concerns highlighted in reviews (e.g., need for pilot data, HQP training, increased ancillary productivity, grant coherence, etc.
    • For proposals with areas of concern related to the productivity of the researcher and/or the HQP, the Committee may recommend other sources of longer-term support other than TSGP
    • The Committee may request a face-to-face meeting with the applicant
    • Decisions will be made within 30 days of the application submission deadline to ensure sufficient time to address outstanding issues and to prepare a revised grant

Note: Neither adjunct researchers nor Professors Emeriti are eligible to apply for the TSGP program.
