Purpose:
To recognize, encourage, and reward superior faculty mentors of graduate students—those faculty who go well beyond advising by bringing their skills and commitment to a student’s learning and professional development as future teachers, practitioners, researchers, and scholars through mentoring.
Criteria:
The committee will be examining the application packages for evidence of (but not limited to):
- Providing exceptional service to graduate students as a supervisor and research mentor
- Encouraging, inspiring and supporting students to reach their full potential in ways that are tailored to each individual
- Integrating students into the culture of the discipline, and helping them network with relevant individuals
- Assisting students to explore career options and to find fulfilling post-graduate positions
Eligibility:
Faculty of Science regular faculty members (tenure or tenure-track). Nominees must not have received this award during the 5 previous years.
Nomination Process:
Nominations may be made by graduate students.
Application packages will include:
- Nomination letter detailing the reasons for the submission.
- One letter of support

Review Process:
Application packages will be circulated to the Award Committee electronically for individual review. The committee will then meet to discuss the applications, and reach a decision.
The Award Committee, struck and chaired by the Dean of Science, will consist of Department Heads (or their designates).
Award:
The Award will be given to a maximum of one individual each year. Successful applicants will receive a $500 research grant, and a certificate, that will be presented at the Faculty of Science Spring & Shout event on April 3, 2019.
